Repaying a Loan Early: Rights and Process

In Switzerland, you have the right to repay your consumer loan early at any time – in full or in part. This option can save you significant interest costs. Learn here how early repayment works.

Your right to early repayment

The Consumer Credit Act (KKG) guarantees you the right to repay a consumer loan at any time before the agreed end of term. This applies to both full repayment and partial repayments. The lender may not charge an early repayment penalty.

How much you can save

With early repayment, you save the interest for the remaining term. The earlier you repay and the higher the outstanding amount, the greater the savings. Example: For a loan of CHF 30'000 at 5.9% interest over 48 months, if you repay after 24 months, you save approximately CHF 900 in interest.

Early repayment process

Contact your lender and communicate your wish to repay early. Request an exact statement of the outstanding amount. Transfer the stated amount. You will receive confirmation of full repayment. The ZEK entry will be updated accordingly.

When is early repayment worthwhile?

Early repayment is particularly worthwhile if you unexpectedly receive money (e.g., inheritance, bonus), if the loan has a high interest rate, if there is still a long remaining term, or if you are planning debt consolidation at better conditions.
